To restore one or more users from an Entra ID backup, follow the steps described in this document.

Tip: Before performing a restore, you may want to view more information about a user (such as their memberships and/or role assignments). You may also find it useful to compare object versions among different dates, then select which version to restore. If this is the case, see View User Attributes & Restore Specific Versions.

Restore All or Specific Users

To restore one or more users from the latest Entra ID backup, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Syncro Tenant's Details Page.
  2. In the Cloud Backups section, locate the row for "Entra ID” in the Service column, then click Restore:

The Cloud Backup for Entra ID Dashboard displays:
  3. Select Users in the top navigation. The Users page, which contains a list of all user accounts backed up from the Entra ID Tenant, opens:

Note: The latest version from backup is always displayed in the table by default.
  4. Locate the user(s) you want to restore.
Tip: Type any part of a user's Name or ID into the Search box to narrow the list. You can also sort by clicking any of the column headers.
  5. Select the users to restore:
    • To select all users: Check the box in the header row of the table to select all users in the Entra ID Tenant.
    • To select multiple users: Check the box next to each user's name.
  6. Click Restore Selected.
  7. In the “Restore Data” pop-up window:
    1. Use the calendar picker to select a snapshot date and time.
    2. Check the boxes for your desired restore options.
For example, if you want to restore missing group memberships and role assignments to the already existing user(s), check the “With Memberships” and “With Role Assignments” boxes. If you want to restore a single user with a new name without memberships or assignments, check “With object” and “As New.”
  8. Once you have selected the options, click Restore.
  9. Finally, be sure to reset any restored users' passwords. Microsoft does not allow the backing up of password and MFA-related details. When a user is restored, you must reset their password. The user will also need to set up MFA for his/her Microsoft account. (You can do this from the End User's Details Page.)

View User Attributes & Restore Specific Versions

Before performing a restore, it can be helpful to see more information about a user, such as their group memberships and/or role assignments. Sometimes it may also be helpful to view and compare the object versions among different dates.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Follow steps 1-3 as described in Restore All or Specific Users.
  2. Click a User's name. This displays more details about them.
  3. Click the arrows to browse the different time points/version dates for the object. The version at the selected time point is always displayed. Red font indicates a changed value for that attribute; i.e., object attributes marked with red font are changed in this version from the previous version:
  4. If you already know which date's version you want to restore, click Restore This Version.
  5. Otherwise, click the “View Memberships,” or “View Role Assignments” links:
    • View Memberships: Displays the groups the user belongs to:
    • View Role Assignments: Displays the role assignments the user has been granted.

Tips:

  • You can select any day and time from the calendar to view the Membership/Role Assignments of the selected time point. From there you can detect the timing of the changes, which will help you to choose the correct version date & time from the calendar.
  • Changes to a List are recorded in the corresponding Log. (For example, changes to the Membership List are recorded in the Membership Log.)
  • If a List is empty, there were no Memberships/Role Assignments at the selected time.
  1. Click Restore This Version to start the restoration (or, click outside the window to close it).
